To better prepare students for future careers and further education, the Montello School District has converted to a standards-based assessment and grading system referred to as Grading For Learning (G4L). This practice will more accurately measure and communicate a student?s learning, growth and academic achievement. The G4L grading system will also positively affect teachers, giving them the opportunity to better personalize learning for each student based on their specific needs and goals.
With a letter enclosed in the first progress notes sent home during the 2014-2015 school year, parents in MSD were notified of the district plans to implement standards based grading (now referred to as grading for learning or G4L) during the 2015-2016 school year. This letter explained G4L, the proficiency levels, and the fact that every teacher was expected to use this approach in at least one course/class during the 2014-15 school year. It also noted that some teachers were fully implementing the new grading approach. Following the initial notification letter (fall 2014), four parent meetings were held in the evenings throughout the school year. Intended to address parents questions and provide information, these meetings were noticed in a variety of ways such as notices sent home, school newsletters, Infinite Campus notifications, and announcements in the Marquette County Tribune. We are now at the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year and are in full implementation of G4L. Families of junior and senior high students will have noticed the proficiency scale on each course syllabus sent home at the start of the school year. Now that we are in full implementation there will undoubtedly be questions that were not addressed during the 2014-2015 school year. Parents are invited to submit questions using the link here: G4L questions. These will be posted on the G4L website.
